02 Jan Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Payroll Reminder
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States, celebrated on the third Monday of January each year. It is a day to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an influential civil rights leader who fought against racial discrimination and segregation through nonviolent protest.
The idea of a holiday to honor Dr. King began shortly after his assassination in 1968. However, it wasn’t until 1983 that legislation was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan, establishing the holiday. The first MLK Day was observed on January 20, 1986.
Today, MLK Day is not only a day to remember Dr. King’s legacy, but also a day to promote equality, justice, and service to others. Many people use the day as an opportunity to volunteer in their communities and participate in events and activities that honor Dr. King’s teachings.
